Former President of Fiji Methodist Church says call for Sunday trading ban is unchristian

A former president of Fiji's Methodist Church says the church's renewed call for a ban on all Sunday trading is unchristian.

The comment comes from the Rev Josateki Koroi who was deposed as president in a church coup following the 1987 Rabuka coups.

The Methodist Church's annual conference this week resolved to ask all city and town councils to ensure that no business is permitted to open on Sunday and any other day significant on the Christian calendar.

The church says they want Sunday to be observed as a holy day.

But the Rev Koroi has told Radio Legend that the church cannot force people to follow the Christian faith and go to church on Sundays because that is a matter of personal choice.

The Rev Koroi says worship is from the heart and cannot be achieved by stopping people from living.

He says banning people from working and living is foolish because no good will come out of it.
