Ousted French Polynesia president set to form own party

8:12 pm on 24 September 2007

French Polynesia's ousted president, Gaston Tong Sang, is set to form his own party after protracted rifts within the Tahoeraa Huiraatira.

The party, which is led by another former president Gaston Flosse, put him in power last December but many of its members sided with the opposition last month and voted him out of office.

Despite the open rift, he didn't resign from the party nor was he expelled.

Mr Tong Sang has held a public meeting with the leades of some of the small parties that backed him in the monthas before his ouster.

Some Tahoeraa members have objected strongly to Mr Flosse's change of position to consider co-operation with the pro-independence opposition.
