American Samoa promotes breast cancer awareness

1:19 pm on 26 October 2007

The message being promoted for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in American Samoa is early detection saves lives.

The Department of Health has made presentations on types of screening available on island for breast cancer, the causes of cancer and support services for cancer victims.

Dr Delinda Wills says some of the cases she has seen are too advanced by the time they come to the hospital to be checked.

"If we can catch breast cancer early, often times we can just remove the cancer, the lump, without removing the rest of the breast in what is called breast conservation surgery."
