A French Polynesian assembly member has written an open letter asking the French authorities for help fight the high rate of sexual abuse and domestic violence in Tahiti.

Sabrina Birk says in her letter to the overseas territories minister that police lack resources, the courts are slow and the prison is full.

She says while the incidence of rape is three times higher than in France the French authorities are responsible for public safety.

"We have two raped per day according to the study and so in order to solve this problem, we ask for more means to be given to the police."
