12:40 pm on 4 January 2008

American Samoa's traditional leaders will meet this month to look at ways on improving the teaching and use of the Samoan language.

The leaders from all villages were called together by Governor Togiola Tulafono through the Secretary of Samoan Affairs to also discuss the proposed Samoan Language Commission.

Togiola says a forum will be held sometime this year to get public opinion which is necessary to assist a Language Commission which will also include looking at language use in Samoan culture.

The Commission according to the governor is needed to set standards, review curriculum and give advice on Samoan language studies.
