Politician in Palau charged with fraudulently obtaining tens of thosands of dollars

A state governor in Palau, Lazarus Kodep, has been charged with an alleged misuse of public funds.

The Palau Horizon reports that the Office of Special Prosecutions has charged Mr Kodep with 302 counts of conversion of public funds, and misconduct in public office.

According to an affidavit between January 2002 and November 2004, Mr Kodep received Melekeok State funds for official expenses.

In most cases there was allegedly no supporting document for the spending.

According to the affidavit, 46 withdrawals amounting to more than 190,000 US dollars were made without any supporting documents.
