Australia concerned over treatment of Fiji media

Australia's foreign minister Stephen Smith says he is concerned the intimidation of another newspaper publisher in Fiji is part of moves by the country's military government to muzzle the media.

The comment comes after the publisher of the Fiji Times was summoned to Fiji's interim attorney-general Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum last week.

Mr Smith says it is part of a disturbing pattern of behaviour since the coup of December 2006 which has severely eroded fundamental human rights and the rule of law in Fiji.

He says claims by the interim government that the Fiji Sun publisher was deported because he was a security threat have no credibility.
