Tonga's Pohiva says PM's office should update rolls

One of Tonga's pro-democracy MPs says the electoral roll should have been updated before the country's recent election.

The issue was first raised by Tonga's Prime Minister, Felete Sevele, who says the published roll at 67,000 is at odds with the 2006 census showing 100,000 people live in Tonga.

Re-elected Member of Parliament Akilisi Pohiva says there is a great need to update the roll because more than a quarter of the roll are living outside Tonga.

"Discussions have been taken between myself and the senior people in the PM's office, and I raised that point, I raised that the registration roll should be updated so that the people who have already died should be removed from the list. Not only that but the people who are not living in Tonga should be taken into account."

Akilisi Pohiva says it is the duty of the Prime Minister's office to update the roll.
