Fiji Media Council Chair says media faces threat of regulation

10:05 am on 24 June 2008

The chairman of the Fiji Media Council, Daryl Tarte, says the independence of the media in Fiji is under serious threat of government regulation.

The Fijilive website quotes Mr Tarte as appealing to those who believe in media freedom and responsibility to support the independence of the media in Fiji.

His call echos similar sentiments to those of University of the South Pacific academic Ron Duncan who said it was better that the media in Fiji regulate itself through the media council and codes of conduct.

Both men agree that statutory regulation is not the way to go.
