Hawaii bankruptcy filings were up 46 percent in June compared to the same month a year earlier.
The Honolulu Advertiser reports Figures compiled by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court show that 163 people filed for bankruptcy in June.
It is the highest monthly figure for bankruptcy filings in Hawaii in 32 months.
The newspaper reports that Hawaii bankruptcy filings during the first six months of 2008 are up 30 percent over the same period a year earlier.
Much of the increase is related to consumers having problems meeting credit card bills and mortgage payments as the Hawaii and U.S. economies slow.
