Fiji interim PM criticised for overseas trips as Olympic Games beckon

Opponents of Fiji's interim Prime Minister say his overseas trips are a waste of taxpayers' money.

The national director of the ousted SDL party, Peceli Kinivuwai, says Commodore Frank Bainimarama spends most of his time out of the country rather than trying to resolve Fiji's internal problems.

The Commodore heads overseas tomorrow for the sixth time this year, to watch the Beijing Olympic Games.

Mr Kinivuwai says as a non-elected Prime Minister, it is totally inappropriate for him to make such trips.

"The economic climate in Fiji is very very dim, the investors are not coming, we have a very bleak economic future to look forward to. With all that to take into consideration the Prime Minister has decided to take an entourage to watch the Beijing Olympics. We should put our house in order before we can put up a front to the outside world. I mean, what's the sense in going to watch the Olympic Games when our country is in turmoil?"

Peceli Kinivuwai says most people in Fiji agree with him but are too afraid to speak out.
