Solomon Islands former Prime Minister, and presently Speaker of the National Parliament, Sir Peter Kenilorea, says 30 years after independence, political instability and poor governance have plagued the country.

Addressing a meeting on the causes and problems of political stability and governance, Sir Peter said political party related issues, the electoral system, and corruption at various levels, discrepancies between local cultures, attitudes and modern party politics, have all had an influence on good governance and political stability.

He said the party system in Solomon Islands had never been really strong and party politics had always been very complex.

Sir Peter said over the past few years, he had noticed the function and influence of the political parties had declined with every new parliament.
