French Polynesians protest over stagnant economy

7:39 pm on 4 September 2008

Latest statistics show that French Polynesia is now officially in an economic recession.

Tourism has been at a standstill for the past five years with the number of arrivals stagnant at around two hundred thousand.

The industry has also been aggravated by the global fuel price rise.

Other casualties in the current economic downturn include the fishing and the black pearl farming industries.

Unemployment is up to 11.7 per cent with the hardest hit youth, especially school leavers.

Meanwhile, the Porinetia Ora party organised a march in downtown Pape'ete to illustrate its concern that the ongoing political instability has the territory going backwards.

The protestors, clad in black held placards with the message "Our country is in mourning, our country is going backwards".
