A rift within the New Caledonia's anti-independence The Future Together party has deepend and let to a split.

Most party members will now form their own party ahead of next year's general election after disagreeing with the leadership.

Speaking on behalf of the new faction, Philippe Michel says the party will be launched on Saturday when its name will be revealed.

The Future Together emerged as the dominant force in the 2004 territorial election but has split into two main camps, one following the president of the southern province, Philippe Gomes, and the other Didier Leroux who is the party's new president.

The anti-independence camp has been breaking up and is now represented in the territory's Congress by six parties.
