Tonga gets big boost from coronation

The Tongan Government says the economic boost from the coronation of King George Tupou 5th in August was nearly ten million US dollars.

It says this is based on analysis by academic Dr Semisi Taumoepeau, in conjunction with the New Zealand Tourism Research Institute.

Dr Taumoepeau says the hosting of special and major events generates substantial economic benefits for the host countries, and the coronation was a prime example of this.

He says the total number of visitors to Tonga for the coronation was nearly seven thousand.

Dr Taumoepeau says the benefits were apparent throughout the economy.

At the time of the coronation the Government faced criticism over the extravagance of the event.
