A Papua New Guinea NGO says the death of Sir George Constantinou is inexcusable and has left people shocked and bitter, but they should not respond with brutality and illegality.

The PNG chapter of Transparency International says the authorities are responding by encouraging the destruction of the property and homes of people whose involvement has not been proven.

TI says the laws must be respected by all authorities, elected politicians, employed officials and business houses.

It says the misuse of power and authority is a corruption of the legitimate purposes for which those powers have been provided.

The watchdog says if PNG is to create a society that offers equality for all its citizens, then the people must apply themselves to restoring the institutions of government, including the police.
