Fiji's interim government has ordered schools to raise the flag and sing the anthem regularly to instil more national pride in children.

The country's interim Education Minister, Filipe Bole, has sent letters to every school directing them to observe the flag-raising ceremony every week and to allow all students and teachers to recite the oath and sing the national anthem.

In a statement he says the ceremony should instil in students a sense of patriotism, and for this reason, the practice will now be obligatory for all schools.

They have also been told to drop names that have any religious or ethnic bias, to promote unity among Fiji's multi-racial population.
