Tonga's Minister of Police, Siaosi 'Aho, has been announced as Tonga's first High Commissioner to New Zealand.

The new Tongan High Commission will be in Wellington and is expected to be in operation by May of this year.

The Lord Privy Seal, Sateki 'Ahio, will be Tonga's Deputy High Commissioner to New Zealand.

Matangi Tonga online says the Prime Minister, Dr Feleti Sevele, announced the appointments on Television Tonga last night.

Dr Sevele said it has been a long-term plan of the government to have a diplomatic mission in New Zealand.

Meanwhile, a new Minister of Police for Tonga is expected to be appointed by April.

Siaosi 'Aho was Tonga's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom in London during the 1990s.
