A tropical cyclone alert has been issued for Wallis and Futuna by the Fiji Met Service.

It says the tropical depression is likely to develop into a tropical cyclone within the next 24 to 36 hours.

The system is currently slow moving and is expected to lie south of Wallis and Futuna in the next day, where winds may increase to damaging gale force.

It says there will be squally thunderstorms, rough seas, and flooding is possible in low-lying coastal areas.
