Niue fishing plant to remain shut this year

It is unlikely the only fish processing plant on Niue will be re-opened by the end of the year, with Niue's government wanting to re-analyse its current business plan for the factory.

New Zealand-based Reef Shipping shut its Niue plant about a year and a half ago.

As well as a new business plan for the factory, Niue's premier, Toke Talagi, says the government is working with partners, like the Forum Fisheries Agency, to see if it can help with the commercialisation of its fisheries.

"Therefore we will be talking to other partners to determine whether we can re-open the factory but at the same time ensure that we catch and harvest, we catch and process and export fish from our EEZ (exclusive economic zone). That's considered as being very important to us."

Toke Talagi says his Government has been in talks with the factory's owners, Reef Shipping, and the Forum Fisheries Agency to try and work out a plan for the future.
