Power imbalance cements abuse, says Samoan support group

The Samoa Victims Support Group says victims of rape and their witnesses are afraid to come forward and testify against the rich and powerful.

A group spokesperson, Viliamu Paese, has told the Samoa Observer the hardest part is when a defendant with a lot of influence and power is accused by the poor and needy.

Mr Paese says this is a big concern because victims have nowhere to turn for help.

He says they have a lot of cases where the victims have decided to withdraw their charges because of the high profile defendants using their power to try and hide the truth.

Mr Paese says the Samoa Victims Group is trying to find another option to overcome the problem.
