American Samoa government to spend 10 million dollars on repairs to power plant

6:37 am on 17 October 2009

American Samoa Governor, Togiola Tulafono has submitted a bill to the Fono authorizing the American Samoa Government to loan $10 million to the American Samoa Power Authority to carry out repairs to the main power plant and other infrastructure.

The Satala power plant has been rendered inoperable by the September 29 tsunami..

The loan would provide ASPA the necessary capital while it faces reduced revenues and increased expenditures as a result of the quake and tsunami.

Due to the urgent need to restore, maintain and provide necessary utility services to American Samoa, and to ensure that ASPA can finance its operational costs, the bill becomes effective immediately upon passage by the Fono and approval by the governor.
