Three Papuans in the Indonesian town of Manokwari have been given prison sentences for unfurling the Bendera Sabat flag in front of the office of a Bintuni district chief in January.

Roni Ruben Iba was sent to prison for three years, while Isak Iba and Piter Iba were given sentences of two years each.

The Manokwari court house was heavily guarded by local police as relatives of the accused flocked to the court to hear the verdict amid a tense atmosphere.

Two of the sentenced men had to be restrained by police as they reacted noisily to the verdicts.
