8:12 pm on 14 December 2009

Fiji police say strong winds and heavy rain are already battering parts of the country as Cyclone Mick gets closer to the capital.

The cyclone, which is bringing winds gusting up to 150 kilometres an hour is expected to pass close by Suva by around three Tuesday morning.

A police spokesperson Atunaisa Sokomuri says emergency services are on standby and emergency centres have been established.

He says they are already feeling Mick's strength.

"There's a lot of rain, we can also experience strong winds in the capital of Suva. Also there've been numerous reports of roads being closed throughout Fiji. Also, the cyclone seems to be affecting mostly the island of Viti Levu."

Atunaisa Sokomuri is advising people to stay indoors and those in low lying areas to move to higher ground.
