Reports from New Caledonia say a new French presidential Airbus has made a stop-over in Noumea as part of work to ready the aircraft for service next month.

The Airbus 330, dubbed Air Sarko One, is to provide a means for long-distance travel for the president and other top leaders.

The plane reportedly cost more than 240 million US dollars and is equipped with advanced communications capabilities.

About 50 people, including top military staff, are travelling on the aircraft, which is believed to have arrived from La Reunion.

The French high commission has declined to give details but it is believed the plane will fly to French Polynesia later this week.
