New Caledonia Congress to elect third governent in a month

6:43 am on 1 April 2011

New Caledonia's Congress is due to meet today to elect a new collegial government - the third in a month.

The election comes amid a deepening dispute over what flag the territory should choose.

Walter Zweifel reports.

"The anti-independence Caledonia Together Party is expected to resign from the collegial government the moment it is formed today because it wants France to call a general election. The rival anti-independence Rassemblement-UMP Party is alarmed at how its support for the joint use of the Kanak and French flags has engulfed politics and triggered serial resignations. A march to cherish the Kanak flag has been called for tomorrow to counter an earlier plan for a march for a new flag. Caledonia Together has described the planned additional march as an act of intimidation."
