The Vanuatu prime minister, Sato Kilman, says he may call on the President to dissolve parliament.
Mr Kilman is to face a motion for a vote of no confidence in an extra-ordinary session of Parliament on Sunday.
Yesterday's session was called off after Mr Kilman and 23 of his MPs boycotted it, ensuring it lacked a quorum.
The prime minister says he wants to use the extra time to entice more MPs to join his coalition.
Mr Kilman says the opposition doesn't have the numbers to overthrow his government because they only have 26 of the 52 MPs, but he says he wants to avoid a hung parliament.
He says if there's a constitutional crisis, the easiest thing is to dissolve the Parliament and let the country have fresh elections.
Mr Kilman says the current situation isn't stable and there's no guarantee that a new government would last.
