Hawaii marijuana dispensary bill fails

1:35 pm on 3 May 2011

A bill in Hawaii to introduce a medical marijuana dispensary has failed after a conference committee last week, made up of House and Senate lawmakers, couldn't agree on how to start it.

The measure would have launched a five-year pilot programme for a medical marijuana dispensary.

A spokesperson for the Drug Policy Forum of Hawaii, Pam Lichty, says there is a lot of support to have marijuana made available for pain relief.

"There is this big grey area. You have to go to the black market, the illegal market, in order to buy your medicine, and this is a huge barrier for many people."

Lawmakers have said the issue deserves further study and may be reconsidered next year.
