Verdict due in Vanuatu in PM election case

8:20 am on 13 May 2011

Vanuatu's court of appeal is today expected to give its verdict in the case brought by a former prime minister, Sato Kilman, against the election of his successor.

Last month, the supreme court had found that the speaker of parliament, Maxime Carlot Korman, had acted constitutionally when he approved the election of Serge Vohor as the new prime minister.

Mr Vohor's election was possible after 26 of the parliament's 52 MPs voted for him.

But Mr Kilman claims that a majority of 27 was needed for the vote to be valid.
