The head of the American Samoa police's Criminal Investigation Division says a lack of job opportunities is often the reason behind the high level of burglaries in the territory.

Captain Lavatai Ta'ase Sagapolutele told Samoa News burglaries were the most common crime his division encountered last year.

93 burglary incidents were reported, followed by 47 property damage crimes and 30 thefts.

Lavatai says burglary suspects typically tell police they are jobless and need money, and that's why they've committed the crime.
