Fiji flood victims get agricultural lease rent waived

Fiji's iTaukei Trust Board says it is waiving the annual rent for agricultural lease tenants affected by severe flooding in the Western Division.

The Trust Board, which looks after more than 80 percent of customary land in Fiji, has waived the payments of 541 tenants in the Nadroga-Rakiraki corridor.

Its general manager Alipate Qetaki says the leases are worth just over 192,000 US dollars.

"We have a very targeted group that we have addressed in our decision which is the group of farmers whose cane farms were damaged during the recent flood. It is to assist them to rehabilitate themselves and get back to normality."

Alipate Qetaki says other forms of assistance are also being offered to other tenants.
