CNMI mayor against Tinian lease renegotiation

3:14 pm on 4 April 2012

In the Northern Marianas, the mayor of Tinian Ramon Dela Cruz says there is no need to renegotiate the 100-year land lease with the U.S. Department of Defense.

Mr Dela Cruz has told the Governor Benigno Fitial they do not want to disturb the current relationship with Defense, adding it should only be enhanced.

Two thirds of Tinian land is leased by the U.S. military.

His comments come after learning of the governor's letter to U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta in February.

In that letter, Governor Fitial asked Mr Panetta to initiate direct discussions on the future uses of U.S. military land on Tinian because none of the promised developments on the island has materialised for 35 years.
