Highlands police in PNG capital mercenaries to do bidding of O'Neill Government - Kumbakor

An MP in the Sir Michael Somare faction in the Papua New Guinea political crisis says police from the Highlands causing trouble in Port Moresby are mercenaries.

Police from Mt Hagen were reportedly brought into Port Moresby about three months ago at the time parliament had fractured into two regimes with separate administrations and police forces.

The Highlands police, who appear to be privately funded, have been accused of terrorising the public, and this week clashed with local police, injuring several.

MP Andrew Kumbakor says the Highlands police have no other objective than to support the control of power by an illegal regime.

"Illegally, unconstitutionally elected government. In fact Parliament should have already risen last month and we are supposed to be in an election. But because the illegal regime wants to stay in power to have more access and then finally once they feel comfortable to go to elections then they will conduct the elections. At the moment they don't feel comfortable."
