The head of the US company, Gibson Guitars, says more than 2,000 jobs may be created in Fiji if plans for a new mahogany processing factory go ahead next year.

Its CEO, Henry Juszkiewicz, has told the Fiji Times the company is in talks with the government and other partners including Sustainable Mahogany Industies which already make Gibson guitar parts.

He says he hopes to see the project completed by 2013.

Last week, the interim Prime Minister launced the Fiji Pure Mahogany brand at a ceremony at the existing factory in Deuba, saying the brand represents great promise for Fiji.

He thanked landowners of Nukurua mahogany plantations for their patience, commitment and support of the new direction saying they will receive much better returns.
