Vanuatu confirms October 30th as election date

Vanuatu's general election will be held on Tuesday October the 30th.

There had been confusion over the date, with the electoral office last month saying it had received instructions from the prime minister to retract the date it had announced because no date had been officially approved and gazetted by the president.

But the chairman of the electoral commission, John Taleo, says the date has been approved, along with a public holiday for that day.

"On the electoral roll, the inspection is on at this point in time. In fact, registrations already closed, on the 30th of March, we have the inspection until the first of July. It's to do with the election logistics, the election is under control."

John Taleo says candidate registration will begin in September, and official campaigning will begin on October the 10th.
