Power restored on Tonga's Ha'apai islands

1:56 pm on 13 June 2012

Tonga Power says it has restored power to Ha'apai after two of its three generators there broke down last week.

Its chief executive, John van Brink, says when there is peak demand in Ha'apai two of the three generators need to be used.

He says when two broke down at the same time it meant they had to ration electricity availability.

But Mr van Brink says service is now back to normal.

"We have repaired one of the generators. It took us about three or four days but as of last night [tuesday] two generators up and running and all the load will be supplied again."
