Samoa Nonu growers welcome juice exports to China

The President of the Samoa Nonu Association Garry Vui says the news that a New Zealand company will start exporting bottled nonu juice to China is welcome relief for growers.

Since Pure Pacifika Limited first began operations in Samoa last year, it's been exporting nonu in bulk but now it will extract the juice, bottle it and ship it to China.

Pure Pacifika had hoped to supply three million litres of nonu a year when it set up in Samoa but late last year had to reduce the volume of fruit it was buying due to issues with its client from China.

The company now expects exports to pick up again and Garry Vui says growers just want to sell the nonu they're growing.

"If the volumes that they had initially talked about are going to be met, it doesn't necessarily matter whether it's bulk or bottled. I mean in most instances bottled products you're going to get a higher return as opposed to bulk so I would think from foreign revenue point of view it's going to be a positive."

Garry Vui expects more work opportunities to stem from the extraction and bottling of nonu juice.
