American Samoa gubernatorial candidate claims federal aid wasted

A candidate for Lieutenant Governor in American Samoa, Le'i Sonny Thompson, has questioned why the territory doesn't have more to show for the 9 billion US dollars in federal funding it has received over the last 16 years.

He told a campaign event for himself and candidate for governor Afoa Moega Lutu, that for a population of 60,000 people, that amount of money should mean more financial independence and better infrastructure, but that is not the case.

Le'i, who has been a cabinet member in the Togiola administration during the last four years says the same government has been in power for the 16 year period and the territory must now choose leaders who are not afraid to make bold decisions.
