Controversy over absentee ballots in American Samoa run-off election

6:49 pm on 20 November 2012

On the eve of American Samoa's run-off election to choose a governor and lieutenant governor, the team of Lolo Matalasi Moliga and Lemanu Peleti Mauga has written to Chief Election Officer opposing absentee ballots to be hand carried by government staff in Honolulu.

They say the decision is unprecedented because it will undermine the integrity of the election process with regard to being free from any perception of impropriety.

They say the Governor's Office in Hawaii was never designated as an official polling place and the officer's decision was not applied to the election two weeks ago.
