Fiji police are investigating the death of a student from Australia who was part of a group celebrating the end of the school year at a Fiji resort.

The police say the 18 year old student was part of a schoolies group holidaying at Plantation Island Resort.

Police say the student drowned in the early hours of the morning.

Fiji's Permanent Secretary for Tourism, Elizabeth Powell, says it is a terrible tragedy and the government has offered its help to the family.

Reports say the teenager and his friends had been partying around a pool at the resort off Nadi and he was found dead about four o'clock in the morning.

The Fiji government says a schoolies group of about five hundred have been holidaying in Fiji.
