Bougainville's first police commissioner dies

8:50 pm on 27 March 2013

The first police commissioner in the autonomous Papua New Guinea province of Bougainville, Joseph Bemu, has died.

Mr Bemu, who became the province's police chief in 2004, served in the role until 2007 when he retired due to ill health.

New Dawn FM quotes acting Assistant Police Commissioner, Paul Kamuai, saying Mr Bemu led the Bougainville Police Service through a very challenging time when the province had just emerged from the crisis period and there was a lot of distrust shown towards police.

Mr Bemu has been buried in his home village in South Bougainville.
