An American Samoan man is fighting for his life at the Intensive Care Unit of the LBJ Hospital after being hit with a machete last week.

Police have charged Alesana Utuone with first degree assault, which is punishable by a jail term of up to 30 years, for the offence.

They say the 51-year-old victim was getting off a bus when he was allegedly struck on the neck by a machete swung by the defendant.

Police are not able to say what motivated the attack.
