Fiji's Agriculture Ministry says it welcomes a decision by the Methodist church's new president to impose a ban on the consumption of kava by church ministers.

The Reverend Tuikilakila Waqairatu announced the decision at the church's annual general meeting in Suva.

The minister, Inia Seruiratu, says high consumption of kava also has an effect on the production and it affects a farmer's concentration at work.

"If kava is not controlled particularly in the way it's being consumed this is one of the obstacle that we are facing interms of our development and particulary in the agriculture and we welcome the decision of the Methodist church."
