Tonga is now connected to high speed internet after an official commissioning ceremony today.

Tonga's King, Tupou the sixth, and the Prime Minister, Lord Tu'ivakano, turned it on with the click of a mouse in the control room of the Tonga Cable Corporation.

Lord Tu'ivakano says the faster internet and higher bandwidth delivered at affordable prices are a real opportunity for the country.

The 800 kilometre fibre optic cable system links Tonga to Fiji via the Southern Cross Cable, which is the main trans-Pacific link between Australia and the United States.

The link-up is part of the 32 million US dollar Pacific Regional Connectivity Project supported by the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank and the Tonga Cable Corporation.
