Fire destroys part of Nauru's only hospital

3:14 pm on 15 August 2013

Patients have been moved because of a fire at Nauru's only hospital today.

The government spokesperson, Joanna Olsson, says the fire affected the pharmacy, the medical store, the X-Ray facility and the medical records office.

She says the wards were not directly affected but patients have had to be moved.

"Luckily the fire was contained and not moved to further adjoining buildings but there was a lot of smoke so that would have affected the patients. The acute patients and the emergency patients were moved to the old hospital which is now used as the public health centre and long term patients, these are patients that are bedridden - there's about 3 or 4 of them, so they have been moved. And I was told when I was there this morning that a new born baby was also moved."

Ian Rintoul of the Australian based Refugee Action Coalition says the fire is the last straw and the asylum seekers being held on the island should be taken to Australia.

He says there is a gastro intestinal outbreak in the crowded and unhygienic temporary camp on the island and Nauru lacks the facilities to provide adequate medical care.
