PNG top court rules against election gifting practice

In Papua New Guinea, the practice of distributing food and gifts at gatherings that coincided with the 2012 election has come under scrutiny in the Supreme Court.

The court upheld a National Court ruling which nullified the 2012 election of former Kairuku-Hiri MP Paru Aihi but not before expressing concern about candidates' abuse of traditional practices such as feasts and gift giving.

Our correspondent, Todagia Kelola, says the criticism by the judges will put the spotlight back on the 2012 election, and whether the victories of some MPs can be attributed to such practices.

He says the ruling will set a precedent for other bribery cases or other election petition bribery cases before the court.

"Any candidate who hosts a big feast or gives gifts during that period of election would be deemed as an intention to bribe."

Todagia Kelola says a by-election will now be held for the Kairuku-Hiri open seat.
