American Samoa launches new campaign against NCDs

Rowing together to a Healthier American Samoa is the slogan chosen to help the territory with the non-communicable disease crisis.

The Strategic Action Plan for Non Communicable Disease Prevention and control, which has taken a few years to compile, has been made public today.

Statistics used in the plans are from a 2007 behavioral health study which found 93.5 percent of adults were overweight or obese, 47 percent were diabetic and one third of the population had hypertension.

The World Health Organisation's Pacific representative, Dr Baoping Yang, says the plan reflects the political will of the territorial government to deal with the NCD crisis.
