Samoa looking to overcome quarantine issues with exports to NZ

Samoan businesses and exporters say better communication is needed to boost New Zealand importing their products.

The Samoan Association of Manufacturers and Exporters held the 'Gaosia I Samoa' New Zealand Trade Show at the Mangere Arts Centre on Friday.

The Vice President and coordinator of the event, Tagaloa Eddie Wilson, says Samoan products like taro, coconut cream and beer are making their way to New Zealand, but barriers like quarantine can be overcome easily with better communication.

Samoa exports around 20 percent of its produce to New Zealand, but Tagaloa says New Zealand exports almost 20 times the amount back to Samoa, and there needs to be more balance.

"It's just a matter of clear communication and establishment of what is required. Our exporters are pretty internationally certified and know what to do if they're told, so as long as there is that mutual understanding and acceptance, I am sure we can overcome any issues of quarantine."

Tagaloa Eddie Wilson says attracting New Zealanders to invest in Samoan industries is another priority.
