Fiji and PNG embroiled in a diplomatic spat

4:48 pm on 9 December 2013

The Fiji government has refused to recognise the appointment of Papua New Guinea's high commissioner as the dean of the diplomatic corps.

PNG's high commissioner to Fiji Peter Eafeare was recently appointed the dean of the diplomatic community in Fiji.

But the Post Courier newspaper says the refusal by the Fiji Government to agree to the appointment has led to Port Moresby recalling the diplomat for consultations.

The actions of the Fiji government has caught the PNG government by surprise, with the paper reporting prime minister, Peter O'Neill, saying he is not sure of the reasons behind the move.

PNG has recently had close links with Fiji with Port Moresby providing millions of dollars in support for the 2014 election process.
