PNG's Catholic church critical of carving removal

5:25 pm on 10 December 2013

Papua New Guinea's Catholic Bishops' Conference is dismissing claims by the speaker of parliament that carvings in the building are ungodly images that must be removed.

Speaker Theo Zurenuoc says the traditional carvings and decorations are elements of cult and demonic practices and unworthy of a Christian country.

But the Post Courier newspaper quotes the conference general secretary Father Victor Roche saying the claims, if true, are ridiculous.

He blames fundamentalist Christians who cannot distinguish between the novelty of the Gospel and what of the past needs to be preserved and treasured.

The paper quotes Father Roche warning citizens to be aware of the rising religious of fundamentalism which he says sprouts from a mix of arrogance, insecurity and ignorance.
